About the Invercargill Chess Club

The Invercargill Chess Club Runs Friday 7pm - 9pm

The Invercargill Chess Club is located at Hansen Hall, 133 Tay Street, at the Southern Institute of Technology. The Club is wheelchair accessible and provides enough equipment for up to 25 simultaneous games of Chess. The club provides an outlet for chess enthusiasts to share their passion for chess. We welcome players of all ages and skill levels from 6 all the way up to 60+.

Our History

1866

According to the Southland Times the Invercargill Chess Club was established before 1866. However, in 1866 the club had been in decline and was revived with The Invercargill Chess Club would meeting at the Club Hotel on Tuesday 31 July 1866. The club fees at that time were 6 shillings per quarter or 2 shillings 6 pence per month.

1959 - 2001

In 1959 the Invercargill Chess Club became an Incorporated Society. In 1993/94 Invercargill hosted the New Zealand National Chess Championships. In 2001 the Invercargill Chess Club Incorporated Society was dissolved.

2016 to Today

In 2016, thanks to the efforts of Club President Gary McLean, the Invercargill Chess Club was revived in 2016. In 2017, thanks to the addition of our new Club Administrator Eddie Lee, many new members joined the Chess club which was located at Cornerstone Church. In 2017, thanks to support from the Southern Institute of Technology, the Club moved premises to Hansen Hall at 133 Tay Street.
